Zones of Regulation

The Zones of Regulation is an emotional wellbeing curriculum that uses four colours to help children self-identify how they’re feeling and categorise it based on colour. The curriculum helps children understand their emotions, sensory needs, and thinking patterns.

They learn different strategies to help them cope and manage their emotions based on which colour zone they’re in. The Zones of Regulation helps children recognise their own triggers, learn to read facial expressions, develop problem-solving skills, and become more attuned to how their actions affect others.

In Early Years the children are introduced to the language of emotions through ‘The Colour Monster’ book. Each class has copies of this story and a display and use it regularly to talk about and name different emotions.

In Years 1-6 each class has a Zones of Regulation display in their room and the staff and children enjoy regularly checking which zone they are in. The classes develop a toolkit that they can use to help them self-regulate

See below a document to an explanation of the four different coloured zones, an example check in sheet, a toolkit that you can try at home of different strategies and a link to a video about the 3 parts of the brain.
