Spanish
We have chosen Spanish as our modern foreign language. We are a very multicultural school and Spanish is the second most spoken native language in the world. We are lucky that Spanish is taught in KS2 by Mrs Gonzalez, a native speaker.
We see Spanish as a stepping stone to a love of language learning. Our approach is very conversation-based. Children learn key phrases and vocabulary, building on these over time. Being in mixed age classes enables pupils to rehearse and consolidate, increasing the amount of written Spanish in year 4 and subsequently, year 6. To enable all pupils to access Spanish, we’ve introduced the use of Language Nut – a web-based programme that offers a fun way of learning the language through games.
Spanish is taught through five strands: Oracy, Literacy, Intercultural understanding, Knowledge about language
Each strand is broken down in the key skills needed to learn Spanish.
Children who have mastered the language enough to write have the opportunity to write to a Spanish Penpal. Spanish culture is highlighted through an annual Spanish Day and opportunities are taken throughout the year to make links.
